
Let’s Talk Carbon Infrared Lamps: What You Actually Need to Know
When you’re shopping around for carbon infrared lamps, it’s easy to get bogged down in price tags. But here’s the thing: you aren’t just buying a light bulb. You’re paying for how much heat is actually hitting your product. These lamps use carbon fiber filaments instead of the usual quartz. Why does that matter? Because they heat up incredibly fast. If you need a quick burst of short-wave heat, these are your best bet.
Power, Voltage, and the “Heat Soak” Problem
Prices usually swing based on the wattage and voltage. Most shop floors run on 230V, which is standard. But if you’re running a heavy-duty industrial line, you might see 400V tubes. Those are great because they keep the current draw low and let you use thinner cables. Now, if you go with a 2500W tube, you’re getting a massive amount of heat. It’s powerful. But be careful. That kind of energy puts a lot of stress on your reflectors. Plus, if your cooling system can’t handle the ambient heat soak, you’ll end up frying your sockets way sooner than you should.
The Nitty-Gritty: Glass and Plugs
We use high-purity quartz glass. We do this so the infrared radiation actually gets out of the tube instead of getting trapped inside. You might see some lamps with special coatings. These are handy if you’re working with PET plastics because they tweak the heat to be more efficient. Just a heads-up: those coatings can flake off if the lamp goes through a sudden, extreme temperature shock. It’s a bit of a trade-off. As for the fit, we usually stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They should slide right into most industrial heaters. One pro tip:**make sure your wiring is tight.**A loose connection at the terminal will cause an arc, and that’ll kill your lamp in a matter of days.
Putting Them to Work
These things are absolute workhorses for paint curing and PET blowing. They hit the target temperature almost instantly, which means your cycle times drop and things move faster. But there is a catch. Carbon filaments are a bit more fragile than old-school metal coils. If your machine vibrates while the lamps are running, you risk snapping the filament. Keep your mounts rigid. Trust me, it’ll save you a lot of headaches and replacement costs.
