If you’ve ever worked on smart grid electronics, you know the struggle. You need a very specific kind of heat to get a component off the board without accidentally frying the entire PCB. Most shops just buy cheap heating lamps, use them until they pop, and then toss them. It’s a waste of time and money. We got tired of that cycle, so we decided to build something that actually lasts.
Getting the heat exactly where it needs to go
Here’s the thing about pulling a surface-mount device (SMD) off a board: it’s all about how the heat hits the solder. We went with short-wave IR emitters because they don’t just float around like hot air. They punch right through the solder mask and hit the joint fast. By tweaking the tungsten filament and the gas inside, we’ve kept the heat concentrated. It ramps up quickly. You spend less time waiting for the board to warm up and less energy overall. It just feels more efficient.
Why these don’t just burn out
Most lamps fail because the filament thins out and eventually snaps. To stop that, we use a halogen cycle. Think of it as a recycling system—the halogen gas pushes evaporated tungsten back onto the filament. And we didn’t stop at the bulb. We use high-purity quartz glass because it doesn’t crack when you cycle the heat up and down rapidly. Then there are the connectors. We use reinforced R7s or specialized skews because a loose connection is a death sentence for a lamp. It creates a hot spot, the metal oxidizes, and pop—there goes your heater. We make sure our connections stay tight.
A quick heads-up on the power
These lamps pack a punch. That’s great for those thick copper planes you find in grid hardware, but it does mean your workstation is going to get hot. If your exhaust system can’t keep up with the rise in temperature, you might run into trouble—like warped PCBs or melting plastic housings nearby. Just make sure your ventilation is up to the task. We’re building these to last because we’re over the “disposable” mindset. You should be spending your day repairing the grid, not digging through a bin of dead lamps.
